September is United Way month
Show your local love by doing local good
There are so many ways you can do local good – right here, right now.
Even the smallest actions have the power to change someone’s life.
September is United Way month and we’re challenging all individuals to show their local love by doing local good. It’s easy. The simplest of things can make a positive difference and put a smile on someone’s face – as well as yours. Because doing good feels good!
Here’s a few ideas to get you started.
Join over 2,000 Calgarians to show your local love by marching down Stephen Avenue in support of the #UNIGNORABLE social issues that matter most to you on September 5. The march ends with a free community BBQ and live entertainment at Olympic Plaza. Meet on Stephen Avenue between 5 and 6 Street SW at 11 a.m.
Show your local love by cheering on teams pulling together to solve our city’s #UNIGNORABLE issues on September 15 at . Teams compete to haul a 200,000 pound plane across the tarmac at this family-friendly, carnival-style event being held at the UPS Customer Centre (22 Aero Drive NE) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Kids Pull, with mascots Minni Mouse, Peppa Pig, Olaf, and Mario Bros, will take place over the lunch hour.
You can’t solve a problem if you don’t know it exists. Learn more about #UNIGNORABLE social issues and what you can do to help. When armed with knowledge, we are able to come together to build solutions.
Volunteer with an agency or not-for-profit that works in an issue area important to you (hunger, homelessness, domestic violence, mental health, kids).
Help an elderly neighbour with yard work.
Surprise someone with free coffee or transit fare.
Smile at a stranger. You never know what they’re going through!
Share how you’re doing local good by tagging social posts with #DoLocalGood or thank someone for doing local good to you. Challenge and inspire others to pay it forward. Let’s make acts of kindness viral!
Show your local love by doing local good, like this stranger did through a simple gesture that unknowingly made a huge difference in someone else’s life: Kindness of a Stranger.
